THE RESCUE
While Azrael was learning about his true lineage, Eve and Gabriel flew through the cover of clouds, high over London, so as to hide their approach towards Buckingham Palace. In Gabriel’s arms, he held a grim-faced Myles, who did not look at all happy with the arrangement of being carried thousands of feet above the ground. Eve was holding tightly to Darius, who was squinting down at the ground, looking out for the palace.
“There it is!” he cried over the noise of rushing wind and flapping wings, pointing at the historical building ahead.
Buckingham Palace stood almost unscathed, though the gates and a section of the outer wall were destroyed. The gate itself lay bent and twisted. The palace, however, seemed almost normal, aside from the fact that the Union Jack now waving in the wind was in tatters, barely more than shredded ribbons. And all around the palace, like an enormous dome, there was a barely perceivable haze, like heat rising from a highway. Darius knew this to be the protective enchantment that Abzu had cast over the palace to keep Angels from entering. The only Angels anywhere near the palace now were the Elite Soldiers that Abzu had stationed inside. Darius also noticed that numerous Elite Soldiers in their black armor were scouting around the perimeter, both on foot and in the air, looking for anyone who might get too close. To the North East, Britain’s armed forces were attempting to fight back, swarming down The Mall in a desperate attempt to reclaim the palace and force out the invaders, but their guns and tanks meant nothing to the Elite Soldiers, who seemed as though they were almost laughing at the humans as they swatted them aside like plush toys.
“Remember the plan!” Gabriel shouted to Darius and Myles. “Penetration at ground level is impossible with the number of guards, so you shall enter from the air. You cannot pass the barrier around the palace using your powers, so you will have to wait until you have physically entered the field. Once through, you will be traveling at a high velocity and will have approximately one-point-eight seconds before your collide with the palace rooftop. We do not have time to wait for you to heal your broken bones from that, so act quickly and hide yourselves from the guards inside by pulling the veil over yourselves at once. Once we release you, Eve and I will wait precisely three minutes before beginning our distraction. At which point-”
“At which point,” Myles interrupted, shouting over his shoulder, “assuming we haven’t either been incinerated by the shield or killed by Elite Soldiers, or the Keres, we sneak through the palace, find Raphael, and get the Hell outta Dodge. Yeah, we got it!”
“Are we sure we can get Raphael back through the barrier without it killing him?” Darius asked.
“Quite sure, yes,” Gabriel replied. “Abzu’s Elite Soldiers have been seen exiting the palace at times, walking out through the barrier, but none pass through to enter.
